You might use an app to track your steps, running route, or cycling route, or to monitor your activity through another device (e.g. Fitbit, Apple Watch, Smartphone). You might also use apps to manage your gym membership or book your next yoga class. Sometimes these same accounts are used to book important medical appointments too. These accounts contain information about our location and the areas, gyms, or studios that we tend to frequent. They may also contain times we visit and billing information. If someone else has access to these accounts, they may be able to track your location and access personal information about you.
- Review linked devices and login history. Remove any devices you don’t recognize.
- Change your password and set two-factor authentication.
- Review your privacy settings and unfriend/unfollow your former partner.
- Some activity trackers allow your friends to “follow” you and see your activity – consider removing anyone who is connected to your former partner from your contacts list.
- Check your recovery details to ensure it is your contact information.
- Think about your privacy before you post/link.
- Ask the app not to track your location, if possible, through your location settings.
- Consider not posting updates or check-ins on your app or other social media platforms.
- Do not store your credit card on the app so no additional purchases can be made without your consent.
These apps often encourage you to “share” your progress with others by linking to your social media and posting. Consider not linking your wellbeing and fitness apps to other accounts as this can give away too much personal information.
Caution: Please note that if someone else has access to your account, they may be notified of these changes. Some abusers may escalate their violence. Control and coercion may make some of these steps neither possible nor safe. If you have children or other dependents, you might consider going through some of these steps with their technology and accounts as well.
